White mulberry – properties

White mulberry is known for its beneficial properties. Its healing effect was known to the Chinese, who used white mulberry leaves among other things to lower cardiovascular pressure and in cases of high cholesterol. Today, as scientific research confirms, white mulberry has antioxidant properties through which it reduces the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins, thereby preventing the rise of the "bad" lipid balance in the blood.

It has now been established that white mulberry contains ingredients that lower blood sugar levels. One of them is the compound DNJ, whose action focuses on reducing the rate at which the starch in food is broken down into simple sugars. That also helps reduce postprandial hyperglycaemia.

White mulberry, and more precisely its leaves, contains compounds of the flavonoid group that take part in eliminating bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella and Shigella dysenteriae. It has also been shown that the alkaloids contained in the leaves and bark of the mulberry can act as antivirals (DNJ compounds) and can also block HIV reverse transcriptase (flavonoid derivatives).

Alongside these properties, white mulberry is an ally against excess weight. Scientists have shown that mulberry extract administered over a 32-day period to obese mice brought about a reduction in their body weight.

According to recent scientific studies, white mulberry could be effective in reducing the risk of conditions affecting cognitive function. The extract of this plant's leaves blocks the formation of the β-amyloid1-42 protein and reduces its neurotoxicity, a potential risk factor for cognitive decline.

White mulberry leaves are commonly used in Eastern European countries, notably in Poland.
