The benefits of peppermint leaves
Much appreciated for its slightly pungent taste and its intensely refreshing effect, peppermint is used mainly as an essential oil or as an infusion. It differs from other types of mint such as spearmint or Moroccan mint, which are used in cooking or in drinks.
The main properties of peppermint concern our digestive system. It helps make digestion easier after a rich meal, and helps limit the onset of discomfort.
Very fresh, it is ideal to drink after meals. Its stimulating effect on bile production also helps support the elimination of toxins.
The benefits of peppermint are recognised by health bodies such as the WHO, the European agency and the European Commission, notably to help relieve abdominal pain and for its beneficial action in cases of irritable bowel syndrome.
As regards peppermint leaves, the EMA considers "traditionally established" their use to help relieve the symptoms of digestive complaints.
How do peppermint leaves work?
Peppermint leaves owe their properties mainly to 2 compounds: menthol and menthone.
These two active compounds are responsible for peppermint's stimulating and soothing effects. A study has also shown that peppermint leaves retain close to 75% of their phenolic compounds, which have antioxidant properties.
The peppermint leaf contains many aromatic secondary metabolites such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, monoterpenes and triterpenes.
Among its other uses, peppermint is also said to have an antibacterial and antiviral action.
Since peppermint leaves are very refreshing when drunk as an infusion, they can also have a decongestant effect on the airways.
The pharmacist's view on whole peppermint leaves
Ideal at the end of a meal, particularly over the festive season, peppermint infusion combines the pleasure of the taste with digestive benefits. Its properties, recognised by several health bodies, make it a product to recommend in cases of frequent digestive complaints, or simply to help restore comfort whenever the need is felt. Using whole leaves keeps all the plant's properties intact and gives a maximum concentration of actives compared with a tea bag, for example.
Peppermint leaf infusion can be complemented by other plants with beneficial digestive properties such as caraway, fennel, lemon balm or cumin.
Very refreshing, peppermint infusion can be drunk hot or cold for variety.
