Nicknamed "devil's claw", harpagophytum is one of the most widely recommended plants for inflammation and painful joints, particularly in cases of joint discomfort.
Devil's claw, recognised effectiveness against joint pain
The World Health Organization (WHO) considers "clinically established" the use of harpagophytum "in the care of pain linked to rheumatism", particularly in chronic inflammation of a joint, joint discomfort and lower back pain.
Harpagophytum, traditionally used to support the healthy functioning of the joints (1), also supports digestion (2) and stimulates the appetite (3).
Harpagophytum root helps preserve joint health (1) and good mobility (5), and helps maintain the flexibility of joints and tendons (5). Scientific publications such as the systematic review by Chrubasik and colleagues show that the majority of studies conducted on harpagophytum appear to indicate a soothing and analgesic action in cases of acute and subacute inflammation (6-7).
This research led to the study of the composition of harpagophytum root, in which many compounds have been isolated, such as harpagosides, flavonoids, phytosterols and phenolic acids (4).
For athletes, devil's claw calms the pain of a sprain
Its analgesic and soothing effects help calm the pain linked to a sprain or tendinitis.
It is not, however, the plant to take in cases of muscle contracture.
