Organic echinacea capsules: the benefits of Echinacea
Echinacea is a plant native to North America whose flower is used in herbal medicine to act on the immune defences as an immunostimulant. Echinacea purpurea is the most widely used echinacea species.
The traditional properties of Echinacea purpurea
Echinacea purpurea has age-old traditional properties. Its use in Native American culture was highly significant. Native American peoples (Cheyenne, Sioux, Comanche and others) used it to support the respiratory natural defences, for toothache and sore throats, and also for snake bites. These healing properties make echinacea a precious plant for strengthening the body's natural defences.
Advantages of echinacea in capsule form
Echinacea is ideal for dealing with the discomforts linked to changes of season. This adaptogenic plant is regarded as a natural tonic. It stimulates the natural defences, which are often under strain when the seasons change. A one-month course, repeatable, is recommended at the change of season to avoid winter discomforts. It helps prevent most winter ailments and ease their symptoms.
Prevention of winter strain on the natural defences
At the first symptoms of a cold or winter discomfort, echinacea helps ease the consequences. As well as being particularly effective in supporting the natural defences of the respiratory tract in cases such as sinusitis, laryngitis and colds, it also protects the lungs from external aggressions such as pollution and tobacco smoke. The immunostimulant properties of echinacea rest on the various molecules the plant contains, such as cichoric acid, echinacosides, alkylamides and polysaccharides.
Recognition by the health authorities
The European agency considers "traditionally established" the use of purple coneflower root (E. purpurea) or narrow-leaved coneflower (E. angustifolia) in "the care of colds". In addition, the use on the skin of purple coneflower root is recognised for "the care of blemishes and spots linked to mild acne". It recommends reserving its use for adults and children over twelve.
Studies and research: the University of Lorraine
The University of Lorraine carried out an in-depth thesis on the immunostimulant properties of echinacea, confirming its effectiveness as a natural ally for the respiratory natural defences and other common conditions. That study, entitled "Study of the immunostimulant properties of Echinacea purpurea", brought to light the mechanisms by which echinacea stimulates the immune system, notably by increasing the activity of white blood cells. The research also underlined echinacea's ability to reduce the duration and severity of the symptoms of colds and winter discomfort, consolidating its traditional use in herbal medicine.
How echinacea works
The immunostimulant properties of echinacea rest on the various molecules the plant contains. The cichoric acid, echinacosides, alkylamides and polysaccharides it contains stimulate the immune activity of certain white blood cells (monocytes and granulocytes) responsible for destroying and digesting infectious micro-organisms. On wounds, echinacea extracts work by inhibiting the proliferation of bacteria and …
