Organic milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a biennial plant that grows mainly around the Mediterranean basin. The Greeks were already using it in antiquity for its beneficial action on the liver.
The plant is still credited with several properties today. Its main benefit lies in its ability to strengthen and protect liver function as well as the gall bladder. Organic milk thistle therefore allows a cleansing of the liver. It can prove very effective against bloating, abdominal cramps, constipation and diarrhoea. It is also said to restore radiance to the skin indirectly, through its action on the liver and the purification of the blood that it brings about.
Silymarin as the natural active compound:
Its properties come from its active compound: silymarin. To be precise, silymarin is a compound of 3 flavonoids of which silibinin is the main active constituent. It is worth remembering that flavonoids are antioxidants that counter free radicals. Moreover, since the good health of the immune system is closely linked to that of the liver, a parallel can be drawn between the action of milk thistle and the maintenance of strong immune defences.
Organic milk thistle also stimulates the production of bile, the fluid secreted by the liver that takes part in the digestive process.
Finally, organic milk thistle increases the secretion of glutathione. Glutathione is a powerful endogenous antioxidant. Unlike "conventional" antioxidants, a single glutathione molecule can destroy close to a million free radicals. By comparison, one unit of another antioxidant will generally only be able to eliminate one unit of free radical.
This milk thistle can also be combined with artichoke or black radish to maximise the effects on liver detoxification and on digestion.
